NCA Out-of-School Time Programs: Transforming Lives Beyond the Bell

At New Cottage Arts (NCA), we believe the learning and growth of young people doesn't stop when the school bell rings. Our Out-of-School Time (OST) programs offer transformative experiences that empower youth through music, art, creative expression, and mentorship. These programs provide vital access to the arts for students across Denver, many of whom would not otherwise have these opportunities.

A Safe, Creative Space for Every Student

Our OST programs run year-round and are rooted in the values of care, inclusiveness, and access. From after-school programs to weekend and school-break camps, NCA creates safe, welcoming spaces where youth feel seen, heard, and supported. Whether it's composing a song, designing fashion, or learning how to animate comics, students are encouraged to explore their identity and creativity freely.

Student Impact in Action

Take our current partnership at Grant Beacon Middle School, where our Fashion & Painting enrichment class meets three times a week. Students are guided by artist-educators to explore design, color theory, and self-expression through fashion and wearable art. One student, Sofia, recently said, "This is the first class where I can be myself. I didn’t know I could be an artist. Now I want to be a designer."

Meanwhile, our Westwood Drumline program has become a powerful vehicle for rhythm, resilience, and empowerment. Youth learn percussion techniques while also building teamwork and leadership skills. In the words of one parent: "I’ve seen my son grow more confident with every session. He now walks into a room with purpose."

Creating Cultural & Community Wealth

OST programs at NCA extend beyond just technical skills. They foster social-emotional development, wellness, and cultural pride. During Spring Break Camp 2025, themed "Diversity in Our World," students collaborated on comics and music projects that celebrated identity and community. One camper wrote in their thank-you card: "I learned we are all different but part of the same world. This week helped me understand more about myself and my friends."

Accessible, Equitable, Transformational

All of NCA's OST programs are provided at no cost to families. We believe deeply in equity and work to remove barriers to participation, including transportation support, inclusive curriculum design, and trauma-informed teaching practices.

Our work is made possible by funders, community partners, and individuals who believe that every child deserves access to the arts. From the City of Denver to neighborhood schools and grassroots organizations, NCA is proud to be part of a growing movement to reimagine education and uplift youth.
